But how works Twitter, how can it be used ?
Some important hints:

In principle, there is a sender of a message in Twitter and an unlimited amount of receivers (followers). You can use Twitter to receive public messages (Tweets) of a length of up to 140 characters from all Twitter users you are connected to and/or subscribed to (following). Such a message must not be limited to text it may also include links to websites, photos or even small video streams. This means that this is the ideal tool to quickly send short messages to many followers, who can read them immediately since they are as short as e-mails. Twitter’s advantage is in particular the briefness of the messages that can easily be read at a glance in contrast to long e-mails. Basically a Twitter message is like a circular of one sender to all followers in the network who are connected to this sender.

In addition to the above circulars there are also the so called reply messages. With this type a message with “@USERNAME” before the text itself (reply) is created and sent. This means that the message will not only be sent to the receiver concerned but that everyone who subscribed to this user (@USERNAME) may read it. This works even in case that the receiver of the message is not a “Follower” of yours, which means that he has not subscribed to your messages. Like this you will reach with one single message not only one specific receiver but also all the groups of his followers.

There is also a third way to post Twitter messages – the so called Direct Message (DM). You can use this to contact individual participants. With this method only the specified receiver and not every one of the followers will be able to read the message. For all Twitter messages, however, you should be aware of the fact that the protection of individual messages within the entire network is not very strong and that this platform should in no way be used to send confidential data. 

You can use Twitter to exchange short messages, images or small videos and as a matter of fact also Internet links with other users of the Twitter system. These may be messages with very private contents but also information from partners such as ORGAKOM. You may subscribe to an unlimited amount of Twitter users to receive their contents but also be subscribed by the users of this service (followers), who will then in return receive the messages, which you post. Another important advantage is that this service is free of costs to the user who has Internet access.
